Reading Competition

Reading Competition for Years 5 and 6 - December 2016

Congratulations to: Ayub, Emily, Shanie, Shaydon, (6A Rowling) Aliyah, Kezia, Sameed (5B Wilson) and Reece (6T Pullman), all of whom won the Granard Reading competition and accompanied Mrs Busby down to Waterstones this week. All of the children behaved amazingly and were a real credit to Granard. They all had the chance to select a book for their class which they have the chance to read before anyone else. We found out about some exciting new authors and also made a wish list of books for the future before enjoying a hot chocolate and a treat in Costa. A huge thank you to FROGS for supporting the event.

Runners up in the competition were: Daisy, Tyler, (5S Morpurgo) Gabriel, Iman, Kayden, Louisa, Nana and Raana (6A Rowling). All of these children joined Mrs Busby in the staff room yesterday for a hot chocolate and cookie to celebrate their efforts.

Well done to all who entered!

This week, we went to Waterstones in Putney with Mrs Busby and Miss Watt. We picked out some books and then went to Costa to get some hot chocolate with a cornflake cake - it was fantastic! Then we walked back to school.

November 2015

Congratulations to Iman and Dwayne (5B Wilson); Talha and Abdi (5H Morpurgo); Lubna (6A Rowling) and Diamond-Lee, Aisha and Mahad (6W Pullman) who won the Year 5 and 6 book review competition.  They all wrote impressive reviews which were original and showed evidence of lots of hard work!  They were an absolute credit to the school and a pleasure to take out.  Huge thanks to FROGs for funding the competition!

I was particularly impressed with the children’s reasons for recommending the books that they had reviewed.  Mahad described Friend or Foe as “heart-touching” and Aisha described the “tension and suspense” of the London Eye Mystery as a “real page turning mystery”.  Well done everyone!  We will run another competition at the end of next term.

Our trip to Waterstones

On Wednesday a group of lucky book review winners went on a trip to Waterstones in Putney.

We walked down to Putney and had great fun on the way.  When we arrived at Waterstones it was astonishing to see the amount of books there were.  We met the Manager, Rick, and a lovely employee called Frith who were really nice and told us a lot about the books.  There was a huge selection to choose from and it was really hard to choose as the blurb sounded so good on so many.  Mrs Busby wrote down a list of books we want to buy when we have raised enough money.  We found some great new titles such as Tom Gates, A Series of Unfortunate Events and Skulduggery.

We all chose a book and when we paid Rick he also gave us three books for free.  He even gave us all a chocolate teddy bear!

When we got to Costa Coffee, Mrs Busby took a picture of all the cakes and we chose which one we wanted.  There were chocolate fingers, chocolate cornflake cakes and wafers, they were all scrumptious!  We met the Manager, Richardo, who had opened the new Costa just in time for us!  Eventually it was time to go and everyone was devastated.  We laughed all the way back to school.  It was one of the best days ever.
